Parent Requirements
Who can adopt? The following are requirements for the HIC Ethiopia Adoption Program:
- Single women and married couples, 25-55 years old.
- Married couples must be married 1 year.
- One older partner may be acceptable in some cases.
- Families with children can adopt children who are at least 3 years younger than the youngest child in their home.
- Clients over the age of 50 can adopt children who are at least 7 years old.
These are general guidelines. If you do not meet these criteria we encourage you to talk with us before deciding against adopting in Ethiopia.
Total Length of Time
The entire adoption process takes approximately 6-9 months from the time of application until you return home with your child. Families open to adopting boys and older children will be processed more quickly. The total in country stay averages from 10-14 days.
